Abstract
Colloidal silver or copper deposited on wadding or fabric which has been in part converted to oxycellulose or hydrocellulose is stated to act in humid condition as a catalyst of hydrogen peroxide or ozone. Colloidal silver may be deposited on the wadding &c. by placing this between silver electrodes in a bath of hot water and passing an electric current.ALSO:Colloidal silver or copper is applied to a cellulosic material, such as wadding or a fabric which has been converted to hydrocellulose or oxycellulose to an extent materially beyond that resulting from ordinary bleaching operations but not sufficient to destroy the fibrous structure. The colloidal metal may be deposited by placing the fibrous material between horizontal silver electrodes in a bath of hot water and passing an electric current, or previously-prepared colloidal metal may be mechanically spread on the fibrous material. The products are actively antiseptic and self-sterilizing and may be used as surgical dressings, in some cases combined with adhesive plaster as emergency dressings, as fillings for bottles for sterilizing water, or as preserving and sterilizing agents for organic matter in contact therewith. The colloidal metal is stated to act in a humid condition as a catalyst of hydrogen peroxide or ozone.
