Abstract
435,744. Free - piston compressors. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. April 12, 1935, No. 11374. Convention date, April 14, 1934. [Class 8 (i)] In a reciprocating- piston compressor of the free piston type having at least two pistons synchronized, so that as one moves on its outstroke the other moves on its instroke with respect to their internalcombustion cylinders, a device for admitting starting air to the internal - combustion cylinder of one piston and a device for permitting the escape of air from the internalcombustion cylinder of the other piston are controlled in accordance with the positions of the pistons. As shown, the compressor comprises internal - combustion cylinders 1, 2 and pistons 3-6, the pistons 4, 5 being integral with a double-acting compressor piston 7 in a cylinder 11, and the pistons 3, 6 being integral respectively with singleacting compressor pistons 8, 9 in cylinders 10, 12. The cylinders 1, 2 are each provided with a combustion-air inlet pipe 17, an exhaust pipe 18, and fuel-injection valves. The cylinder 1 is provided with a relief valve 21 in communication with a conduit 22 leading to the air inlet pipe 17, and the cylinder 2 with a starting-air valve 23 communicating through a pipe 25 with a compressed-air bottle 24. The valves 21, 23 are opened by means of air admitted from the bottle 24 through pipes 30, 31 to cylinders 26, 27, in which the air pressure acts on pistons on the stems of the valves. Valves 32, 33 in the pipes 30, 31 are controlled through transmission means from a hydraulic, pneumatic or electric servomotor 42, which is controlled in accordance with the positions of the pistons 3, 6, cross-members 36, 37 on extensions of the pistons 3, 6 being connected by rods 38, 39 and the member 36 acting on the servomotor 42 through a lever 43. At starting, the pistons are brought into the positions shown, so that the valves 32, 33 are operated by the servomotor 42. The servomotor 42 may be replaced by piston valves actuated from the pistons 3, 6, or by levers or hydraulic devices serving to synchronize the movements of the pistons 3, 6. Means may be provided for preventing the injection of fuel into the internal-combustion cylinder 2 during the starting stroke, and for preventing during normal running the supply of starting air to the cylinder 2 and the discharge of air from the cylinder 1.
