Abstract
A plastic composition comprising rubber and cumarone and/or indene resin is prepared by kneading together vulcanized rubber and the indene or cumarone at temperatures of 120-130 DEG C. to form a homogeneous mass consisting of a solution of vulcanized rubber in the resin, and thereupon incorporating additional vulcanized rubber with the mixture; but taking care that the incorporation is carried on just long enough to complete the admixture but short of the mass becoming homogeneous. Up to 50 per cent of the vulcanized rubber may be replaced by unvulcanized rubber, and a small amount of the indene or cumarone may be replaced by other resins such as colophony. Fillers such as wood flour, oils, factis and linoxyn may be added in small amount. In an example 2 parts of old motor tyres are homogenized with 6 parts of cumarone resin and 1 part dried linseed oil at 140 DEG C. 4 Parts of this mass are then further mixed with 4,3 parts chalk and 2,3 parts vulcanized rubber the second mixing being stopped before the mass becomes homogeneous.
