446,722. Reciprocating pumps. FRANKS, E. A., 5, Caegwyn Road, Whitchurch, Glamorgan. Oct. 30, 1934, No. 25185/35. Divided out of 447,116. [Class 102 (i)] [See also Group XXIX] A reciprocating pump, particularly suitable for use as a fuel injection pump, comprises two pistons, 1, 1<1> operating in cylinders 2, 2<1> connected to a common space 4. Followers 27, 27<1> are positioned between the pistons and actuating cams 26 mounted on the driving shaft. The followers 27, 27<1> are guided in rectilinear holes in the regulating members 28, 28<1> which are moved transversely to the axis of the piston to vary the phase relationship of the pistons and thus the quantity delivered and the time that the delivery commenced and finishes. The regulating members have inclined ribs 34, 34<1> which engage grooves in control rods 35, 351 so that movement of the rods 35, 351 cause transverse movement of the members 28, 281. The rods 35, 35<1> may be connected by a pinion 39 and have the grooves at different angles or the grooves may be at the same angle and the connecting mechanism between the rods be such that the movement of one is proportional to that of the other. One only of the rods may be moved. The rod 35 may be provided with a, piston 55 subjected to pressure produced by a pump comprising pistons 41, 42 drawing liquid from the container 48 through suction ports 47 and delivering through valves 50 to a chamber 51 connected to the piston 55. The speed at which the engine shall run is controlled by adjusting the byepass valve 56. The pistons 1, 1<1> are loaded by a spring comprising arms 33 engaging holes in the pistons and a central loop 32 bearing against the casing. Specification 447,116 is referred to.
