Abstract

457,307. Cycle &c. driving-mechanism. STAMATOWITSCH, M., 41, Siebachstrasse, Nippes, Cologne, Germany. April 20, 1936, No. 11250. [Class 136 (ii)] In driving-mechanism for bicycles and like vehicles and for other purposes, of the type in which the weight of the human body is utilized, the saddle or seat being connected to a driving- crank, the weight of the body is caused to act on the upper pivotal point of a quadrilateral frame of links, the expanding and contracting movements of which are transmitted from the upper pivotal point to the crank by a connecting- rod. In the bicycle shown, the frame comprises two immovable bars a, b, and a movable linkwork consisting of four pivoted links c, d, e, f, the saddle h being mounted on an extension of the link c, and footrests o on an extension of the link e, while the pivot between the links c, f is connected by a link g to the bar a. By movements of the rider's body, his weight is made to act alternately on the saddle hand footrests o, thus producing alternate contraction and expansion of the linkwork, the movements being transmitted by a connecting-rod r and crank s to a chain wheel k, which is mounted on the link e and drives the rear wheel through a chain m. In a modification, the linkwork is slightly modified, the link c being connected to an intermediate point on the link g, and the link e extended back beyond the wheel axle, and the drive is supplemented by pedal-crank mechanism, the crank s being extended to form one of the pedal cranks. The weight of the rider may be supplemented by an inanimate weight acting as an inertia device, and a flywheel and a small motor acting as an additional source of power may be provided.
