Abstract

463,354. Exhaust-silencers. CASPAR, E. April 16, 1936, No. 10995. Convention date, April 16, 1935. [Class 7 (ii)] In an exhaust-silencer comprising a chamber 1 in. which are arranged wires 6 extending transversely to the flow of the exhaust gases, tubular cells 7 are connected to the chamber, the outlet ends of the cells opening into the path of flow of the gases near the outlet of the chamber, and the other ends being closed. The wires, preferably corrugated steel, are secured in a spiral metal band mounted on a central perforated pipe 4 open at the outlet end 3 of the chamber 1, and closed at the opposite end by a cone 5. Gases from the exhaust pipe enter the silencer at 2 and pass partly through the wires and partly through the tube 4. In a modification, the wires are held between the convolutions of a pair of wires twisted together. The density of the wires may be varied by varying the pitch of the band.
