Abstract

466,063. Aerials; wireless signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (Western Electric Co., Inc.) May 8, 1936,. No. 13081. Addition to 420,447. [Class 40 (v)] High-frequency energy is fed through a coaxial conductor to a " dielectric guide," of the kind described in the parent Specification, but adapted to function as an aerial or radiator. As shown in Fig. 1, a source 1 supplies the feed-line 2, 3 which terminates in a flared end 4, 5 closed by a disc 7, which is separated by a gap 8 from a base-plate 6. A cylinder 9, which may be of camphor or other insulator in which the velocity of propagation is less than that in free space, serves to radiate the energy uniformly in all directions as indicated at 12, 13, 14. Or the radiation may be from a " dielectric guide " in the form of a frame aerial, Fig. 2 (not shown). Fig. 3 shows a dielectric guide with enlarged parts which suppress alternate half-wavelengths to give a directional effect. Or the same effect may be obtained by means of metal hands arranged along the length and at the top of the guide. Directional radiation may also be secured by arranging a bank of radiators in columns and rows. In Fig. 10, the feed-line consists of two parallel rods 33 terminated by plates 34, Fig. 11, the resulting radiation having the same directional effect as two linear aerials, situated at the points 43, Fig. 12, separated by half a wavelength and energized in phaseopposition. Tubular feed lines may be slotted at intervals to feed energy into a block of dielectric which is enclosed in a metallic shell with gaps arranged in the sides, through which the energy is radiated as a wave with a plane front, Fig. 14 (not shown). In Fig. 16, a valve oscillator 70 is connected across a guide or shell 62 which may be filled with any suitable dielectric. The waves are reflected from an adjustable piston 69<1>, and are radiated from the open end, which is also fitted with an adjustable extension 621. The leads to the valve electrodes are made telescopic, Fig. 17 (not shown), and they are tuned to exclude parasitic frequencies. A bank of such units may be arranged for directional radiation, either in a given plane, or uniformly in the horizontal plane with no vertical component.
