Abstract

478,140. Thermometers. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) July 10, 1936, Nos. 19245 and 26645. [Class 97 (iii)] Coatings which indicate temperatures by undergoing a non-reversible change of colour at definite temperatures are formed by incorporating with a coating material compounds of metals capable of forming coloured oxides. The compounds on being heated split off ammonia, ammonia derivatives, water, or carbon dioxide. Ammonium salts, ammonium double salts, or ammine compounds of iron, cobalt, nickel, or copper may be used. Carbonates, compounds containing water of crystallization, hydroxides or acid salts may also be used. The temperature at which a compound changes colour may be modified by using it in isomorphous mixture with other substances. Two or more compounds may be mixed so that a number of temperatures are indicated. The coating material may be an aqueous alumina sol or a solution of a urea-formaldehyde condensation product in a mixture of ethanol and butanol. Numerous examples of suitable compounds with the colour changes they undergo are given.
