[Class 18] In a machine for making a box comprising a tray-like member 4, Fig. 6, with a collar 3, a strip for forming the collar is cut from a reel or delivered from a stack 8, Fig. 2, by a pusher 10, over a glueing roller 12, on to a conveyer 15 which carries it in a direction transverse to its previous motion until it is in a position opposite two box-forming devices. A blade 9 ensures that only one strip is delivered at a time. The conveyer is actuated by endless chains passing round sprocket rollers 18 and it is provided with side plates 16 to guide the strips. The leading two strips are drawn by reciprocating grippers, either simultaneously or one after the other, from opposite sides of the conveyer on to pivoted flaps 21, Fig. 3, which are turned immediately to the position shown. A plunger 23 pushes the strip past recessed folding plates 24, which bend it into U -form, and under a further plunger 28 against a support 25 where it is held by fingers which descend into recesses in the plunger 23 before the latter retreats. Pivoted hook-shaped members now swing down to hold the strip while the plunger 28 descends after which the plates 24 move inwards and fold in the arms of the U-shaped strip so that it surrounds the plunger where it is held resiliently by a finger 33 which covers the join in the strip. The finger 33 is pivoted at 34 and is rigidly connected to an arm 35 which is joined by a spring to and can be engaged by an abutment on, an arm 36 loose on the pivot 34. A link 38 connected to arm 36 actuates the finger 33. A cruciform blank having been fed from a roll or pushed by a ram between guides under the plunger 28, the latter, carrying the collar 20, is moved downwards by a link 29, and forces the blank through dies 41 which fold the sides up into contact with the collar, the dies sliding inwards to consolidate the join. During the descent of plunger 28, the finger 33 moves with it until the collar lies between the side flaps of the blank when a screw 48 on a slide connected to the finger abuts against a stop on the machine. The completed box is forced by the plunger on to a table 49 which is also pushed down and, as the plunger is withdrawn, resilient hook-shaped devices hold the box back on the table. A ram 55 subsequently pushes the box on to a conveyer 56.
