Abstract

488,375. Storing and revaporizing liquefied gases. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. Jan. 14, 1937, No. 1106. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1936. [Class 8 (ii)] Liquefied gas is conveyed in a closed insulated container in a subcooled condition so that it does not reach the boiling point under influence of heat leakage during the journey; a part is delivered from the container, evaporated, and the vapour discharged to receiving vessels. Fig. 1 shows a storage tank comprising main and auxiliary vessels 21, 22 surrounded by insulation through which nitrogen gas passes by a pipe 151 from a column 10 which also supplies liquid oxygen to the vessel 22 by a pipe 16. The gas spaces of the vessels 21, 22 are joined by a conduit 27, and liquid is delivered by gravity through a valve 25. Momentary pressure increase in the vessel 21 is attained by delivering a portion of the liquid to a conduit 30 exposed to air and connected to the gas space. Gas is drawn off from the vessel 22 and the liquid thus subcooled either by a fan 32 which conveys the gas through a pipe 36 to a low-pressure storage vessel, or to an injector 19 leading from the lower to the upper section of the oxygen column 10, or by a reciprocating pump 38 delivering the gas after preheating and mechanical and /or chemical separation of lubricating water &c. to storage vessels 46. The vessel 21 supplies liquid oxygen to a transport vessel 48 having an atmospheric heating coil 58 and an exhauster 63 and conduit 65 leading to the gas conduit 27 and the exhauster 32 ; a gas byepass is provided for the exhauster 63, and a liquid discharge leading to a coupling 60. In filling, the vessel 48 is exhausted of gas which is delivered to the gas space of the vessel 21 until this pressure is sufficient to expel the liquid therefrom, excess gas being then passed to the exhauster 32 or pump 38. Subcooling of the liquid in vessel 48 may be effected during delivery by throttling the liquid through valve 52 in the discharge pipe and drawing gas off by the exhauster. Fig. 2 shows a portable vaporizer coupled to the transport vessel 48, and comprising a vessel 78 the residual gas in which operates an injector 90 to fill the vessel with liquid which is afterwards vaporized in a coil 81 the gas passing to storage vessels 86 ; an injector 103 operated by gas from the vaporizing coil draws gas from the vessel 48. In a modification, a pair of vessels 78 is used. In a further modification, a rotary pump delivers the liquid from vessel 48 to injector 90, and a surge chamber is connected with the injector. In further modifications, a warm converter as described in Specification 287,909, [Class 8 (ii)], is employed or a pump as described in Specification 342,423 delivers liquid to the vaporizing coil.
