Abstract

<PICT:0489745/III/1> In the continuous recovery of sulphur dioxide from gases, the sulphur dioxide is absorbed in a solution of alkali metal or ammonium sulphites and sulphate containing such amounts of these salts to make it nearly saturated at the absorption temperature with respect to sulphate only, the absorbent solution is treated to expel pure sulphur dioxide, a part of the water is eliminated from the solution which is then cooled sufficiently to crystallize controlled amounts of sulphate, the crystallized sulphate is removed, and finally the absorbent solution is restored to its original condition by the addition of water and alkali or ammonia and recycled to the absorption stage of the process. Sulphates formed by oxidation are thereby eliminated from the system. When using ammonium salts, a sufficient concentration of an ammonium salt such as ammonium phosphate may be maintained in the solution to depress the solubility of the ammonium sulphate. The removal of the necessary water may take place in the sulphur dioxide recovery step and/or in the sulphate crystallization step. Roaster gases containing sulphur dioxide flow through absorption towers A and B in counter current to an ammonium monosulphite-ammonium bisulphite solution which enters the top of tower B at a temperature of below 50 DEG C. The solution also passes through a cooler E interposed between the two towers. The liquor withdrawn from the tower A is substantially ammonium bisulphite and is heated in a tower C to 110 DEG C. to drive off the sulphur dioxide. Considerable sulphate is formed by oxidation during the absorption and regeneration stages as a result of which the liquor leaving the tower C at 110 DEG C. is saturated with sulphate. The liquor passes to a vacuum crystallizer D, which has a temperature of about 70 DEG C. Here water is evaporated and ammonium sulphate separated by crystallization. The solution is then replenished with water and ammonia and is returned to the top of the tower B.
