Abstract

494,263. Directive wireless signalling. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and FALLOON, S. W. H. W. April 23, 1937, No. 11735. [Class 40 (v)] In a radio direction-finding installation in which the direction is indicated on a cathode-ray screen, the cathode-ray is made to travel a circular path in synchronism with a continuously rotatable wave collector, and when the signal input differs from a predetermined limiting magnitude, the cathode-ray makes a radial deflection, thus indicating the direction of the received signal. The aerial system may comprise two parallel opposed frames rotating about an axis midway between them. In Fig. 1, a double condenser 4 is connected in parallel across the opposed frames 1., 2 and is tuned through a vertical operating rod 5. The input signals across the condenser 4 are coupled from the shielded leads 7, 8, which rotate with the aerial, to the stationary receiver 13 through condenser couplings 9, 11 and 10, 12. Frictional coupling (brushes and slip rings) or inductive coupling may be employed. The receiver 13 includes a non-rectilinear device, e.g. a valve stage operating at grid saturation, so that the receiver output is constant over a wide range of input signals above a predetermined value. This output is applied to the " signal winding " 19b of the cathode-ray tube 18 and a constant-current source 22 is connected to the " radius winding " 19a such that the deflection effects are opposed. The two windings are rotated in synchronism with the aerial so that the cathode-ray traces out a small circle and makes a deflection when the receiver output drops below the predetermined value corresponding to the aerial being in a zero signal position with respect to the station being received. A rotating loop gives two such minima, Fig. 6, but the system may be used with the rotating goniometer of a Bellini- Tosi or Adcock system combined with an open aerial, in which case the 180‹ ambiguity is removed. Specification 468,918 is referred to.
