Abstract
496,059. Shock-absorbers. PATRICOLO, V. May 28, 1937, No. 14918. [Class 108 (iii)] A shock - absorber for vehicles or aeroplanes comprises inner and outer relativelyslidable cylinders 11, 1, a piston 9 connected to the outer cylinder 1 and dividing the inner cylinder 11 into two chambers 16, 17, a rod 21 of decreasing thickness adapted on compression of the shockabsorber to cause a fluid resistance increasing with the shock, the rod passing through an aperture in the piston into a closed bore in the piston-rod 8, and a one-way valve 73 controlling passages 72, Fig. 4, in the piston through which fluid passes on expansion of the device. On compression, the valve 73 closes the passages 72 and fluid passes from the chamber 16 to the chamber 17 up the side of the rod 21 and through further passages 18 in the piston. The cylinder 1 slides on a cylinder 5 surrounding and fixed to the cylinder 11 and the annular space between the cylinders 11, 5 serves as a reservoir flow of fluid between which and the chamber 16 on expansion of the shock-absorber is regulated by a one-way disc-valve 35 controlling apertures 14 in an end plug 12. The piston-rod 8 passes through a stuffing-box comprising plugs 26, 27, 28 providing chambers 24, 25, the chamber 25 being filled with packing compressed by a spring 29 acting between the plug 28 and an end cap 7 screwed on the cylinder 5. Downward movement of the stuffing-box is prevented by the plug 26 engaging a shoulder 30 on the cylinder 11. A modification is shown in which the valve 35 is dispensed with, the concentric cylinders 5, 11 replaced by a single cylinder, and the rod 21 by a conical rod, and in which helical springs are provided to assist the shock-absorbing action.
