Abstract
506,782. Tanks. LAITHWAITE, J. H., and NEILL & SON (ST. HELENS), Ltd., W. May 25, 1938, No. 15640. [Class 69 (i)] In a substantially straight-sided underground tank for storing oil, petrol or other material the walls are formed of a number of curved plates 21 so shaped that each subtends an angle of between 20 and 40‹ at its centre of curvature, joists 18 supporting the plates at their joints. The roof is preferably constructed of similar curved plates 14. The tank shown comprises a concrete base 10 covered with steel plates welded together, to which are welded the bases 12 of columns 11 which support horizontal joists 13 to which the roof plates 14 are welded. The roof plates are provided with stiffeners 15 and braces 16. The marginal portions 17 of the roof are flat and are supported on joists 20 extending between the joists 13 and the vertical joists 18. The latter are provided with an outer flange 23, Fig. 5, having inclined inner faces against which the ends of the wall plates 21 seat and to which they are welded. The wall plates are strengthened by stringers 22. The corners of the tank are formed by plates 24 of smaller radius of curvature than the plates 21, and are stiffened by gussets 26 and stringers 25. The plates 14 and 21 may have a span of about one-half their radius of curvature. Specification 18242/01, [Class 69], is referred to.
