Abstract

516,158. Electrical precipitation apparatus. LODGE-COTTRELL, Ltd. (International Precipitation Co., Inc.). July 21, 1938, No. 21707. [Class 39 (i)] In the electrical precipitation of suspended particles from gases of the type comprising an ionizing zone succeeded by a precipitating zone, the collecting electrode in the precipitating zone is wetted by a continuous film of liquid, which may be water but may also be a liquid adapted to absorb the gaseous products of the discharge such as an alkaline solution, a solution of potassium iodide, oil or other organic liquid. One construction of apparatus is shown in the drawing and consists of a tube made in two parts 1, 2 preferably of sheet metal, lower and upper headers 4, 8 with inlets and outlets 5, 9 for the gas under treatment, a feed tray 6. supplied by a pipe 7 with the flushing liquid which trickles over the upper flared end of the tube section 2, and discharges from the flared lower end into a sump 3 with drain pipe 17. The parts are all welded together and form the non-discharge electrode of the ionizing and precipitating zones' being preferably earthed. Mounted in an insulator 11 secured to the header 8 by a flanged disc 12, bolts 13a and a flexible gasket 13 is the high tension electrode 10 consisting of a rod 14 shrouded for the greater part of its length by a shield 16 and carrying at its lower end a short length of smooth steel wire 15. The gasket 13 is distortable so as to enable the electrode 10 to be centred. The field between the wire 15 and the tube section 1 acts to ionize the gas and charge the suspended particles, which are collected on the electrode 2 under the influence of the non-discharging field between it and the shrouded part 16 of the high tension electrode. The deposited particles are removed by the flushing liquid and collect in the sump 3. In a modified arrangement, the parts 1 and 2 are integral. The arrangement is stated to enable the velocity of the treated gases to be increased and reduce the concentration of such gaseous products as ozone and nitrous oxide which are undesirable in air required for purposes of ventilation.
