Abstract

519,624. Granular metallic products MERLE, J. M. Aug. 22, 1938, No. 24670. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group III] A powdered or granular metallic product consists of particles of substantially uniform size and composition which have spontaneously crystallized from molten metal in a metastable undercooled state at a temperature closely below freezing point. They may be produced by allowing the metal to flow on to a linearly moving or rotating metallic surface, which cools it slightly below freezing point without solidification actually occurring, the undercooled metal leaving the surface in a thin film which then solidifies and breaks up into small particles. The operation may take place out of contact with air, to avoid oxidation, or in a suitable atmosphere for producing particles of a desired composition, for example in ammonia to produce nitrated particles. The particles may be projected through a coolant or against a cooled wall. The product may be employed, for example, for metallic paints and in powder metallurgy. Other materials may be introduced into the molten metal, for example, fine particles of emery, diamond dust, or carbides for producing an abrasive. Specifications 521,689 and 521,690, [both in Group XXII], are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 469,244.
