Abstract

534,182. Stretching and winding yams or cords. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Jan. 11, 1940, No. 636. Convention date, Jan. 19, 1939. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] A machine for stretching and winding tyre cords comprises a cord delivery spool, a stretching device operated by the pull exerted on the cord by a winding- up device, a brake which presses against the cord on the delivery spool to control its tension during the winding operations, and a knock-off mechanism, which is normally maintained inoperative by the brakecontrolled cord tension, for stopping the winding of the cord on the take-up package and means for arresting the brake action on a bunch of cord on the spool and causing the brake control of the tension to cease when the bunch approaches near exhaustion. As shown, the delivery spool 10 is carried by a rotatable spindle 11 disposed in a housing 12 secured to a supporting rod 13 and the cord from the spool passes around a roller 50 at the end of a pivoted arm 48 to the pair of freely running tapered grooved stretching rollers 31, 32 from which it passes to a guide at the end of a compensator arm 39 on the stop motion lever 22 and thence to the take-up of the winding device spool 15. The cord may pass around a driven pulley 35 which assists the passage of the cord through the stretching rollers, and the pulley may be provided with a pressing roller carried at one end of a rocking lever, the other end of which carries a roller under which the cord passes as it leaves the pulley. The brake 40 which engages the cord on the supply spool is carried by a lever 41 pivoted on a pin 44 in a projection 45, on the housing 12, the lever having spaced side walls embracing the projection 45 and an upwardly-extending arm 42 carrying weights 43, the leverage of which increases to increase the pressure of the brake on the spool as the supply of cord thereon decreases. The pulley 50 carried by the arm 48, which may have a pivoted part 51 carrying the pulley, serves to take up slight variations in the tension of the cord, and the arm is connected by a link 53 with a drop wire casting 27 pivoted in the lever 22 and having a hook at its lower end disposed adjacent a dog 29 on an oscillating shaft 30 ; the casting is held up by the tension of the cord between the supply spool and the stretching rollers, and should the tension become abnormally small the hook on the casting moves into the path of the dog 29 which tilts the lever 22 downwards and moves a brake bar 21 between the spool 15 and its driving drum 19 to stop rotation of the package. A similar drop wire casting 28 carries the compensator arm 39 and causes the stopping of the winding when the cord between the stretching rollers and the winding package 15 breaks. The supply spool 10 is wound with a bunch 47 and when the brake pad 40 engages the bunch a stop 55, pivoted on the pin 44 and adjusted by a bolt 56, engages a shoulder on the projection 45 and relieves the pressure of the brake pad on the bunch ; the supply package then rotates freely and the tension of the cord is reduced sufficiently to permit the arm 48 to move downwards and effect stoppage of the winding as before. A brake 59, carried by a yoke 61 pivoted on the housing 12 and carrying a cross bar 63 connected by a spring-controlled rod 64 with the stopmotion lever 22, engages a brake drum on the spindle 11 and stops it when the lever 22 is actuated to stop the winding. In a modification, the casting 28 and compensator arm 39 are omitted.
