Abstract
545,295. Pumps; cooling. NEWCOMBE, C. K. Dec. 9, 1940, No. 17475. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Groups XIII and XXVI] The supercharger of an aircraft or other engine is driven by a turbine supplied with pressure vapour from the cooling system of the engine, the cooling-medium used in which has the physical characteristics of the working fluid of a refrigerating-plant, this fluid being passed by way of an injector-type heat pump or like compressor to the turbine, and the pressure vapour used in the heat pump being generated in an exhaust-heated boiler. The Figure shows the cooling-jacket 2 of an engine supplied by a pump 5 and pipe 4 with cooling- liquid, an outlet pipe 3 at the top being led to a separator 8, from which liquid is returned to the pump 5 by a pipe 13, while the vapour passes by a pipe 14 to a turbine 9 driving the supercharger 16. Vapour from the turbine passes to a condenser 10 in circuit with the pump 5. Pressure vapour is supplied to the heat pump 20 by a pipe 21 leading the cooling- medium through a coil 6 around the exhaust pipe 7. The cooling-medium is preferably one of the Freon group, such as Freon 12, or dichloro-difluoro-methane; or methyl bromide or carbon tetrachloride may be used. In aircraft, a single engine may drive two or more turbo-units, each driving a propeller, as well as supplying the supercharge. The supercharger and pump 5 may also be driven directly from the engine through gearing or a fluid-type coupling.
