Abstract

551,511. Rendering textile fibres &c. wool-like. CREASA, Ltd., and HIRCHBERG, L. M. Sept. 22, 1941, No. 12268. [Class 15 (ii)] Cellulosic textile fibres, yarns and fabrics and materials made therefrom including acetate rayon, viscose, cotton, jute, hemp, flax and ramie and mixtures of vegetable, animal and synthetic fibres are treated by impregnating the material with a protein in the form of a solution or dispersion and modifying the protein in situ by an aldehyde or a ketone under acid condition, the weight of reagent in a given weight of material being such that insoluble, non-hygroscopic products are formed in the fibre and properties similar to those of wool are imparted. The amount of aldehyde &c. varies with the nature of the protein and the fibre but is usually of the order of 3 per cent. formaldehyde by weight in a given weight of fabric. Excess of formaldehyde is avoided.
