Abstract
554,192. Washing granular materials. TROSTLER, F., SKELTON, W. R., HENSCHEL. L. O., and HUNTINGTON, HEBERLEIN & CO., Ltd., Oct. 21, 1941, No. 13515. [Class 82 (ii)] In the washing of granular material, a pool of water having substantially the same width as a surface extending from said pool is provided, into which granular material is fed, water being fed continuously so as to flow into and overflow from the pool, the surface and the latter being jigged or vibrated to cause the material to be subjected to scrubbing action in the pool and after scrubbing to escape from the pool on to the surface along which it moves for further treatment, all the scrubbed material being retained on the surface until it reaches one end where it is discharged. In one form, Fig. 1, the treatment member comprises a pan 1 provided with a horizontal bottom 2 with side and end walls 3 and an upwardly inclined trough 4 extending from the pan 1 and provided with side walls 3a. The member is mounted on a jigged washing screen 5 supported on flexible or articulate-legs 5a. The material to be treated is introduced at 6 and fine sprays of water 7 play on the bottom 8 of the trough 4, the sprays washing the product and running down from the pool 9 in the member 1. The wash liquors overflow through a slot 11 and the washed material passes over the end of the length 4 on to the screen 5. In a second form of the apparatus a mesh false bottom is supported above the bottom of the pan and trough so that the water can be drained from those particles near the discharge end of the latter. In a third form the trough has a doubly-sloped bottom to form the pool and the bottom of the length is also constructed so as to incline upwardly in opposite directions from the centre line of the trough from which ripples diverge in opposite directions. In another form, extra spray pipes are provided for washing the material and forming the pool, as well as another spray pipe arranged over a screen at the discharge end of the trough, and the material may be subjected to a preliminary washing before it is fed into the pool. Specification 547,102 is referred to.
