Abstract
557,710. Temperature - variable resistances. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and SCULLY, C. T. May 29, 1942, No. 7302. [Class 37] A two-terminal non- linear resistance network comprises an indirectly heated thermistor having its resistance element and heating coil connected in the network so that the resistance element is heated both directly and indirectly by the current supplied to the terminals of the network, or by a current proportional thereto. The resistance element R of an indirectly heated thermistor T and the corresponding heating coil r may be in series, as shown in Fig. 1, and the heating coil r may have an additional resistance of the ordinary type in parallel with it. Alternatively the element R and heating coil r may be in parallel, with or without an additional resistance in series with the heating coil. In a modification, Fig. 5, a separate directly heated thermistor TS is mounted in the same envelope as the resistance element R and heating coil r and is connected in series with the heating coil r. Alternatively the thermistor. TS may be a separate element mounted outside the thermistor envelope. A resistance RP may be connected in parallel with the heating coil r. Alternatively the separate thermistor may be in parallel with the heating coil, the extra resistance being in series. The heating coil may be connected through a transformer or autotransformer. The auxiliary resistances may be mounted inside the envelope of the thermistor to form a self-contained unit. The indirectly heated thermistor R and the directly heated thermistor TS may have positive or negative temperature coefficients of resistance.
