Abstract
563,796. Sand blast. WACHTEL, L. - April 13, 1943, No. 5879. [Class 60] [Also in Groups II and XXII] A sand blast nozzle of tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, tantalum, silicon, boron, vanadium, or chromium carbide or of a mixture of such carbides or of such a carbide with iron, nickel, cobalt or manganese is made on the outer surface of a tube of mild steel or of an alloy having low resistance to abrasion. In use, the inner tube soon wears away, leaving the refractory carbide. After a steel tube has been packed with graphite, coal, or clay powder, it may be coated by depositing the carbide from a welding rod or tube or by dipping into a paste containing sodium silicate or other binder. In this case the tube is finally heated to the sintering or fusing temperature of the carbide. In another modification, the carbide is sprayed on to the tube which is then packed with graphite &c. and heated to sintering or fusing temperature.
