Abstract

566,691. Utilizing tidal and wave energy. ROBIN, J. T. Feb. 10, 1943, No. 2251. [Class 69 (i)] Relates to means for utilizing tidal and wave energy of the kind wherein the rise and fall of floats operates double - acting reciprocating pumps. As shown, a pier comprises a platform 11 supported on pillars 12 based on the sea &c. bed, the platform supporting the cylinders 14 of a number of pumps which draw water from the sea &c. through strainers 30a and pipes 29, 30 and deliver it through pipes 31, 32 to the shore. The pump pistons comprise domed discs 16, spaced by bushes 19 and cup washers 20, and carried by piston rods 17, sets of the piston rods being loosely connected, as by discs 23 and housings 24 to preferably boat-shaped floats 22 guided on the pillars 12 by rings 35. In another form, the cylinders are secured to the floats, or each cylinder is secured between linked floats, and the upper ends of the piston rods are secured to the platform. In a further form, the pump cylinders are disposed above the floats,' or between juxtaposed floats, the piston rod of each pump passing down through an aperture in the corresponding float, or between the juxtaposed floats, and being anchored to the ground. The outlet pipes may be of small area.
