Abstract
572,789. Welding ; riveting; uniting by fusion. KLOPSTOCK, H., and NEELANDS, A. R. Oct. 17, 1941, No. 13396. [Class 83 (iv)] In joining steel or hard alloys, iron, aluminium, brass, or other metals, the necessary heat is generated by friction, assisted, if desired, by heat from combustion of gas or flow of electricity. A bar C may be rotated in contact with two parts A, A<1> so that it melts and is deposited to join the parts. The rod is fed axially, the pressure being varied according to the heat required, and this or the work is fed laterally as the metal is deposited. The rod may have an increased manganese and silicon content, to make up for loss thereof, and is preferably chamfered. The rod may be coated with or carry in a groove deoxidizing flux, which may comprise powdered copper, iron, ferric oxide, manganese dioxide, potassium or sodium permanganate, potassium chloride, sodium borate, sodium sulphate, potassium fluoride, &c. Pipes D, E, Fig. 2, may be joined by chamfering to different angles, preferably between 20-30 degrees, and rotating relatively while pressing together, with or without a flux. Similarly, plates F, G, Fig. 3, may be joined by forcing a rotating rivet H, having a shank which is slightly tapered and may be copper-coated, grooved or threaded externally, and slotted, into a more steeply tapered hole.
