574,048. Combustible gas mixtures. STEINSCHLAEGER, M. May 10, 1940, No. 8445. Divided out of 573,925. [Class 55 (ii)] A gas mixture suitable for use in the Fischer- Tropsch process is obtained by heating a mixture of water gas, hydrogen; and coke oven gas in the presence of a cobalt or nickel catalyst at between 160‹ and 250‹ C. to produce an oil and a residual gas which is heated with steam at between 1200‹ and 1450‹ C. This product is then mixed with water gas and a gas obtained by heating water gas with steam at between 400‹ and 550‹ C. and separating carbon dioxide, and the resulting gas contains carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the proportion of 1 to 2. The cobalt, nickel or iron catalyst is activated with thoria. The gases employed should be substantially free of sulphur.
