Abstract

Highly polymeric crystalline or micro-crystalline substances are prepared by reacting a glycol of the series HO(CH2)nOH with terephthalic acid or with a low aliphatic ester of terephthalic acid, and heating the reaction product to obtain esters in a highly polymerized condition. The heating may be continued until a stage is reached where fibres drawn or extruded from the melt possess the property of cold-drawing. The reaction mixture may be heated in an inert atmosphere, or in vacuo with admission of an inert gas through a capillary. An esterifying catalyst, or an ester-exchange catalyst, may be present. Specified esterifying catalysts are hydrogen chloride, p-toluene sulphonic acid and camphor sulphonic acid, and specified ester-interchange catalysts are lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, beryllium, zinc, cadmium, aluminium, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, silver, mercury, tin, lead, bismuth, antimony, platinum, palladium, and mixtures of boron, broken glass or silica gel with a small amount of an alkali metal. Examples are given of the preparation of polymeric esters from:-(1) terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; (2) methyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol; (3) methyl terephthalate and trimethylene glycol; and (4) methyl terephthalate and decamethylene glycol.
