Abstract

581,064. Brakes. SCHNELL, S. Oct. 10, 1944, No. 19504. [Class 103 (i)] An automatic adjuster for a brake shoe, or shoes, comprises a cylindrical member 23 pivotally connected by a pin 24 to a channelsectioned lever 5 carrying the shoe, a cylindrical shell 26 secured to the member 23 and accommodating a piston-like member 27 secured to a rod 28 which slides in a transverse bore in a pin 35, and an element 40 pressed by a spring 42 to hold the rod 28 frictionally in position. The piston 27 has a clearance 30 from a stop 29 welded to the shell 26 and a spring 31 tends to keep the piston against the member 23. The clearance 30 determines the shoe-clearance. The pin 35 and a sleeve 33 having a transverse bore to receive the rod 28, are free to pivot in holes 36, 37 in fixed angles 3, 4. The invention is described as applied to a brake having two shoes applied externally to a drum, the shoe-carrying levers 5 being interconnected for symmetrical shoe application. When wear of the lining occurs, the upward movement of the pin 24, on application of the brake, becomes greater than the clearance 30 and the stop 29 entrains the piston 27 and rod 28, the latter being moved against the frictional resistance of the element 40 which locks the rod 28 in its new position of adjustment.
