Abstract
Solid lithium hypochlorite containing an amount of water substantially less than the monohydrate, is prepared from a solution or a hydrate of lithium hypochlorite by drying under an absolute pressure not exceeding one-tenth of the vapour pressure of water at the temperature employed. Temperatures within the range 20-70 DEG C. may be used, though it is preferred to operate below 60 DEG C. A small amount of lithium hydroxide or other alkali hydroxide may be added to the lithium hypochlorite composition before the drying thereof. Examples are given, two of which instance the use of tertiary butyl hypochlorite in preparing the lithium hypochlorite. Reference to the prior art discloses the production of LiOCl by chlorinating a LiOH solution or suspension and separating the LiOCl from the lithium chloride by treatment with an aliphatic alcohol to form a hypochlorite compound which is readily separable from the LiCl, and subsequently treating the hypochlorite compound with LiOH to obtain LiOCl. Specifications 581,944, 581,945 and 581,948 are referred to.
