Abstract
588,471. Stuffing-box substitutes. HOWARD, WILSON, Ltd., and JONES, D.G. Feb. 20, 1945, No. 4310. [Class 122 (v)] In a shaft seal in which a sealing ring 3 supported from a mounting ring 5 by a bellows or diaphragm. 4 is in facial contact with, and moves relatively to a contact ring 6, yieldable packing rings 7 are located in grooves on the faces of the rings adjacent to the parts to which they are fixed and are deformed on assembly of the seal in its working position to give a fluid-tight fit. As shown, the mounting ring 5 is stationary and the contact ring 6 rotatable, but the arrangement may be reversed. The grooves may be formed in the shaft 1 or fixed part 2 instead of in the rings. Natural or synthetic rubber is used for the packing.
