Abstract
A solution of a liver extract is treated with activated alumina so as to adsorb inactive substances present without adsorbing the haemopoietic principle to any substantial extent, and the alumina is thereafter separated, e.g., by decantation, filtration or centrifugation. Or the solution may perfused through a column of the adsorbent, which may be diluted with an inert granular material such as sand. Aqueous solutions, or water-alcohol solutions containing up to 50 per cent. alcohol, may be employed, at a pH between one and eight. The alumina may be recovered by treatment with say five per cent. sodium carbonate solution, followed by washing with water.
