[Class 140] [Also in Group XXXVIII] The wall of a sounding box of a musical instrument such as a piano or violin consists of a number of thin fibrous laminae bonded together by a sythetic resin adhesive so that the density varies gradually in a direction parallel to the surface of the wall. To produce variation in density, the proportion of the impregnant or adhesive or the pressure applied may vary from point to point. Individual laminae may be pressed separately before being bonded together. The laminae may be of wood, paper, pulp board, fabric or combinations of them. Metal foil may be interleaved. The laminae may be impregnated with thermoplastic and bonded with thermosetting or cold-setting synthetic resin, or interior laminae bonded with thermoplastic resin may be enclosed between skin laminae impregnated and bonded with thermosetting adhesive.
