Abstract

A foam inhibitor suitable for lubricating oils, e.g. motor oils and detergent or "H.D." lubricating oils, comprises a hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons having a viscosity of less than about 50 S.U.S. at 100 DEG F. and containing dissolved therein a minor proportion of an active foam-reducing compound of the formula <FORM:0600693/III/1> wherein R represents the same or different saturated non-aromatic hydrocarbon radicals and n is a positive integer of at least 2. Each R may be a saturated alkyl radical such as methyl, the active defoaming agent being for example polymerized dimethyl silicone, and the hydrocarbon mixture may be an aliphatic petroleum fraction having a viscosity of between 40 and 50 S.U.S. at 100 DEG F. The composition may also contain an active amount of an oil-soluble detergent tending to increase foaming, such as a diphenate of an alkaline earth metal. The composition may be incorporated in a lubricating oil by agitating the mixture by passing a gas through it and the hydrocarbon solvent for the active defoamer may be sufficiently volatile to be substantially removed from the lubricating oil by the passage of the gas, leaving the silicone or other active defoamer (which is insoluble in lubricating oils or nearly so) dispersed throughout the lubricating oil The concentrations of the polymers of low molecular weight silicones, particularly dimethyl silicone, may range from about 0.0001 per cent to 0.01 per cent by weight and seldom above 0.1 per cent of the lubricating oil. Larger proportions of polymers of higher mol. weight silicones, e.g. of dicetyl silicone, may be used, for example 0.05 per cent to 0.5 per cent by weight, particularly in soluble cutting oils containing very viscous base oils and considerable proportions of emulsifier. Silicones containing not less than about 24 carbon atoms per monomeric unit are most effective foam inhibitors for oil-in-water emulsions, and those containing about 10 or less carbon atoms per unit are preferable for controlling foaming of water-in-oil emulsions and single phase organic liquids such as hydrocarbons.
