Abstract

602,237. Suction presses of paper-making machines. BELOIT IRON WORKS. July 27, 1944, No. 14369. Convention date, March 13, [Class 96] In the wet-press sections of a paper-making machine, low-suction zones are provided in the suction rolls, and the felts are so arranged that the web is either held by suction, or is between felts whenever its direction of travel is changed, or whenever the web would otherwise tend to leave a felt. As illustrated in Fig. 2, a roll 32 of a suction couch press has more than one suction zone a, b. zone a being controlled by a valve 33, and holding the web W on the wire 20, and zone b extracting water at the nip. Water lodged in holes in the roll shells is flung into trays 39 and 46, the wire, web, and felt being directed clear of the sprays S. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the web leaving the couch press passes between felts through a horizontal press 11, a vertical press 12, about a pre-drier drum 13, to a Yankee drier drum 17, and to the drier section 16. In a modification, the horizontal press and pre-drier are omitted, and the couch roll 21 is displaced slightly towards the roll 19. The felts, which are of open texture, pass between wringer rolls as at 55, water being collected by a trough 56.
