Abstract

A coating or impregnating composition contains (1) a polymerizable alkyd resin derived from a dihydric alcohol and an a ,b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, (2) a polyester of allyl alcohol and a polybasic acid, (3) a polymerization catalyst and (4) a polyvinyl acetal resin in an amount which is 15-75 per cent of the total weight of (1),(2) and (4). Alkyd resins specified are those from diethylene glycol maleate, diethylene glycol maleate phthalate, glyceryl itaconate and fumarate, ethylene glycol maleate, diethylene glycol itaconate, propylene glycol fumarate, triethylene glycol maleate, and reaction products from ethylene glycol, itaconic acid and phthalic anhydride; diethylene glycol, itaconic and succinic acids; ethylene glycol, maleic anhydride and adipic acid; diethylene glycol, maleic anhydride and stearic acid; glycerine, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride; and glycerine, maleic anhydride and octyl alcohol. Allyl esters specified are diallyl esters of phthalic, carbonic, benzoyl phthalic, oxalic, maleic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, pimelic, suberic, sebacic, azelaic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, mesaconic, citraconic, tartronic, gluconic, tartaric, isophthalic, terephthalic and benzophenone-2,41-dicarboxylic acids, di- and tri-allyl citrates, tricarballylates, aconitates, phosphates and silicates, tetra-allyl silicate and tetra-allyl benzene tetracarboxylate. Catalysts specified are barium and sodium peroxides, phthalyl, succinyl, acetyl, lauryl and stearyl peroxides, ascaridole, tert.-butyl hydroperoxide, di-tert.-butyl perphthalate, tert.-butyl perbenzoate, perborates, persulphates and perchlorates, aluminium chloride, cobalt and manganese resinates, linoleates and maleates. Acetal resins specified are polyvinyl formal and butyral and those obtained from polyvinyl esters such as polyvinyl acetate, propionate and butyrate and aldehydes such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde and benzaldehyde. Solvents may be added to the composition, those specified being furfural, ethylene dichloride, dioxane, chloroform, ethyl alcohol mixed with 1-nitro-propane or an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene or xylene mixed with one or more of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n-amyl, hexyl or octyl alcohols. Inhibitors of polymerization such as quinone may also be added. Laminates, tubes and articles may be formed by impregnating cloth, glass fibre, asbestos cloth, cotton or paper, superimposing the impregnated sheets or tapes and heating under pressure.
