Abstract
Ground wood fibres are felted into a web from an aqueous suspension of the fibres and are bleached by applying to at least one face of the web an aqueous alkaline bleaching solution consisting of a peroxide and a soluble phosphate. The bleaching solution preferably has an initial pH of between 9.5 and 11.5. In examples: (1) a furnish containing 60 per cent unbleached ground wood and 40 per cent unbleached sulphite pulp together with clay, size and alum is formed into a sheet on the wire of a paper machine, pressed to a consistency of 35 per cent, impregnated with a solution containing hydrogen peroxide and trisodium phosphate so as to apply 2.0 per cent of hydrogen peroxide (27.5 per cent) and 2.0 per cent of trisodium phosphate (based on the dry weight of the pulp), and then dried; (2) a pulp sheet containing 70 per cent unbleached sulphite and 30 per cent ground wood is similarly bleached by impregnating with a solution of such concentration as to apply 1 per cent hydrogen peroxide and 1 per cent trisodium phosphate.
