Abstract
627,017. Cooling cylinders. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., MANSELL, H. C., and GORRELL, H. N. April 10, 1946, No. 11065. [Class 7 (ii)] In a sleeve-valve engine cylinder cooling air is divided by baffles to flow in two paths as shown by arrows, one path being across the cylinder head and the other down the cylinder barrel. The air enters by a duct 19 and part is deflected by a cowl 21 and a trough 29 to flow past fins 28 on the junk head. The remainder flows round the annular space formed by cutting away the tops of longitudinal cylinder fins and bounded by a casing 20 formed in two parts connected by a band 36. The upper part is attached to the cylinder by bolts 53, and the two parts are drawn together by bolts 32 and wing nuts 35. Openings 47, 48 are arranged for the exhaust and inlet pipes, that for the exhaust pipe being large enough to allow cooling air to escape and thus cool the pipe. Baffles 49 prevent air from flowing through gaps left between groups of cylinder fins. Specifications 610,584 and 627,018 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
