630,875. Electric soldering-irons. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and FRANKTON, W. J. Oct. 30, 1946, No. 32235. [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] The head or tip 1 of an electric soldering iron is heated by a thermistor heating element 2 to give automatic control of the temperature of the iron. A helical spring 4 compressed between the thermistor 2 and a plug 5 maintains the thermistor in close contact with the inner wall 3 of the hollow tip 1. The thermistor may have a positive or negative temperature coefficient and in the latter case is used in series with a suitably chosen impedance (see Group XXXV). In an example, the impedance is matched to the value of the thermistor at a point midway between the room and working temperature and any small change in temperature produces a much' greater change in the opposite sense in the wattage input thereby tending rapidly to restore the temperature to its stable value.
