Abstract

Organic liquid lubricating compositions comprise a solution of 0.1 per cent by weight or less (preferably 0.01 to 0.05 per cent by weight) of sulphurized oleic acid in a mineral lubricating oil, a non-drying fatty oil, a liquid wax, a synthetic liquid lubricant or a mixture of two or more of these substances. The sulphurized oleic acid may contain over 10.2 per cent by weight of sulphur and may have been prepared by reacting oleic acid with free sulphur in a ratio of sulphur to oleic acid substantially greater than one gram-atom of sulphur per gram-molecule of oleic acid, e.g. oleic acid may be reacted with 12.4-16 per cent by weight of sulphur (see Group IV (b)). Data are furnished showing the reduction in wear as measured in the Boerlage Four-Ball Wear Testing Machine under non-E.P. conditions when small percentages of sulphurized oleic acid containing varying proportions of sulphur are added to a highly refined turbine oil. Examples of lubricating oil "base stocks" which may be used in the compositions are castor oil and synthetic liquid lubricants such as polymerized propylene oxide and organic silicones. Specifications 557,755, 557,756, 557,757 and 634,720 are referred to.ALSO:Sulphur-containing derivatives of oleic acid which may be used as wear-reducing agents in organic liquid lubricants (see Group III) are prepared by reacting oleic acid with sulphur in a ratio substantially less than one gram molecule of acid to one gram atom of sulphur at about 150-300 DEG C. In the example, oleic acid is heated with 13.6 per cent by weight of sulphur for 3 1/2 -4 hours at 150-180 DEG C., in an inert atmosphere. The product is refined by heating at 140-160 DEG C. with about 20 per cent by weight of "Super Filtrol" (an acid-activated adsorbtive decolourizing clay), the spent clay being then filtered off and the treatment repeated with a further 10 per cent by weight of clay. It is suggested that the reaction product may be a mixture of mono-thio-oleic acid having an epithio structure and a substantial proportion of a disulphide of di-oleic acid having twice the molecular weight of the mono acid. Specifications 557,755, 557,756, 557,757 and 634,720 are referred to.
