Abstract

637,962. Centrifugal separators. BIRCHARD, W. H. June 9, 1948, No. 15554. [Class 23] A vortex separator for purifying paper pulp has a long vortex chamber 10 of which the lower third is defined by a perforated wall 15 through which separated matter is discharged into an outer chamber 33. The perforations may be helical slots 34 which are parallel with the flow of the pulp. The walls 15, 16 are supported on a plate 20 ported to permit separated matter to pass from both the vortex chamber and the outer chamber 33 into a sump 21. The plate has an upwardly converging hole 36 through which pulp in the top of the sump can return to the vortex chamber.
