Abstract

638,583. Combustion chambers. JAMESON, J. L. Sept. 25, 1947, Nos. 26092 and 34273. [Class 7 (iii)] In a compression ignition engine a combustion chamber 9 in the piston 1 has a passage 10 through which fuel is injected from a nozzle in the cylinder head, and a passage 11 arranged to cause rotation of the air in chamber 9. The passage 11 opens opposite exhaust valve 14 so that the air forced therethrough on the compression stroke is heated by the area adjacent the exhaust valve. The piston face is recessed slightly at 18, 19 opposite the exhaust and intake valves 14, 15. The passages 10, 11 may be formed in a separate insert of heat-resistant steel, and the passage 11 may be radial to the chamber 9 and have an opening on the piston face which is helically curved to cause the air to be driven into chamber 9 in the form of a helix.
