Abstract
653,641. Automatic temperature control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 19, 1948, No. 4928. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1947. [Class 38 (iv)] The temperature of an electrically heated blanket is maintained constant by means of a valve operated relay controlling the heating circuit. As shown, a blanket 1 includes heater elements 6, 7 energized from a source 11, 12 by operation of a relay 23. The blanket also includes a temperature sensitive resistance 8 which, in series with an adjustable regulating 13, forms one arm of a bridge network energized from source 11, 12. The filament 19 of an emission limited diode 18, the diode being such that the plate current is dependent entirely on the filament current, is connected across the output of the bridge. Variations of the resistance of 8, due to variations of the temperature of the blanket, cause variation of the filament current, and therefore of the plate current of the diode to operate the relay 23 which controls the heating of the blanket in a sense to correct for the variations. Close regulation is achieved by a resistance 30 connected in series with the heater windings 6, 7 in such a manner that this combination is in parallel with the resistance 8 when the relay 23 is de-energized, but when the relay is energized the resistance. 30 is connected in parallel with a resistance 15 which forms another arm of the bridge network. The effect on the filament 19 of variations in line voltage is compensated for by a resistance 17 having a high negative temperature co-efficient.
