Abstract

Selenium dioxide and resorcinol are added to a monohydric phenol-aldehyde resin whereby it may be cured at low pressures. Plasticizers, e.g. phthalic acid esters, fillers and pigments may also be added. In examples: (1) phenol and formaldehyde are condensed in the presence of ammonia, the water is removed, the resultant resin dissolved in alcohol and a mixture of selenium dioxide and resorcinol added; (2) a fabric is impregnated with the solution of example (1) (see Group IV (c)); (3) a cyclostyle paper is impregnated with an ethanol solution of a resin made by condensing phenol and formaldehyde in presence of ammonia; the paper is then dried and pressed into layers to form panels; (4) cotton waste, artificial silk waste, wool waste or straw fibres is impregnated with the solution of example (1) or (3) and the impregnated fibres pressed between flat plates or between dies to form, e.g., trunks, boxes, hat boxes or spherical objects. Specification 661,964 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to selenium dioxide but refers generally to a dioxide of a metalloid from the sixth group of the periodic system. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Fabric is treated with a phenol-aldehyde resin containing a mixture of resorcinol and selenium dioxide as a hardening catalyst. In an example the bending strength and resistance to shock of a fabric is improved by impregnating it with an ethanol solution of a phenol-formaldehyde resin (see Group IV (a)), to which resorcinol and selenium dioxide is added. The fabric is then cured at 100 DEG C. and 5 kg./cm.2 for 10 minutes.
