Abstract
667,071. Making tubes. BUNDY TUBING CO. Jan. 23, 1950 [Jan. 24, 1949], No. 1668/50. Classes 83(ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XIII] Winding and unwinding.-In a method of making tube from strip metal stock 1 wherein the strip is fashioned into hollow cross-section and heated for uniting the seam or plies as by welding or brazing, the hot tubing is progressively coiled into a cooling zone and progressively uncoiled therefrom when cool. The cooling unit 7 comprises a chaindriven drum 40 rotatably supported within a cast metal housing 10 whose interior wall is provided with a helical groove 14. The hot. tube is fed from the welding station 4 into the groove 14 through a guide tube 17 and leaves through one. of a number of exits, Fig. 8 (not shown), the exit being selected according to the desired cooling requirements. A portion 20 having a number of apertures 21 extends transversely across the top of the housing and carries transparent elements through which the tubing may be viewed. Cooling liquid inlet and outlet tubes extend into the drum through the hollow trunnion 45, which also contains an inlet for pressure air which may be necessary to cause the discharge of the cooling fluid to commence. Reducing or non-oxidizing gas may be introduced into the housing through a pipe 31 and burnt off at a pipe 32. When the tubing is being initially threaded a hand operated dolly, Fig. 2 (not shown), is introduced into one of the apertures 21 to engage the tube and cause it frictionally to engage and rotate with the drum. Straightening.-A straightening device, Fig. 3, comprising a roll 81 and guide bushing 82 is located within the appropriate aperture 21 to straighten the tube as it leaves under the action of rolls 8. Both the drum and housing are tapered to compensate for the contraction of the tube as it cools.
