Abstract
672,157. Distilling carbonaceous material. METALLGES. AKT.-GES. July 3, 1950 [Aug. 3, 1949], No. 16566/50. Class 55 (i). A process for the distillation of finelydivided fuel comprises passing the fuel admixed with a circulating heat carrier through a chamber in a closed charge, i.e. so that the relative positions of the charge particles remain unaltered, the heat carrier, after passage through the chamber, being elevated pneumatically for recirculation and, at the same time, being heated by combustion of the carbon contained therein. In the form shown, the apparatus consists of a cylindrical distillation chamber 1 connected at the top by a shaft 4 to the base of a separator chamber 3, a conveyer shaft 2 passing from the latter concentrically through shaft 4 to the base of chamber 1. Fuel, of grain size less than 1 mm., is continuously admitted from a hopper 5 to the annular space around shaft 2 and passes, with heat carrier material of grain size from 0.1 to 1.0 mm., and heated to 600- 1200‹ C., descending from chamber 3, into chamber 1, where distillation of the fuel occurs at 400-1000‹ C., the evolved gases passing off through outlet 9. The coke descends to the base of chamber 1 via a throttling damper 10 and passes laterally into the lower part of shaft 2, where it meets a stream of superheated air entering from line 11 and is thereby lifted up the shaft 2, combustion of part of the coke occurring and so heating the remainder which separates out from the hot gases in chamber 3. The hot gases discharge through outlet 13 to a steam boiler 14 to which secondary air is admitted through a line 15. Any excess of coke formed is removed through an overflow 16. If the reaction coke is unsuitable for use as a heat carrier, sand &c. is added to the ingoing fuel. The calorific value of the made gas may be regulated by admission of steam, with or without air or oxygen to the fuel bed through a line 20.
