Abstract
672,406. Closure caps. FAIRWEATHER, H. C. (Watkins, F., and Andrew, C., (trading as A. W. Machine Co.)), March 21, 1950, No. 7031/50. Class 125(iii) [Also in Group VIII] A machine for lining closure caps has a fixed punch 17 and a reciprocable die 18 above the punch between which die and punch is intermittently fed a strip of lining material 12, discs being punched out of the material but left in situ and the strip is then advanced to a position over caps where the discs are pushed downward into the caps. Lining material 12 is fed from a roll 11 through a channel 13 and feed rollers 14, 15 between the punches 17 which are solidly mounted on the machine bed and dies 18 carried by a depend from a crossbar 19 mounted on eccentric rods 20 moving in guides 21. Mounted within the lower end of each die is a spring-pressed stripping plunger 22 which removes the severed disc 24 from the die at the end of each punching operation, the punches extending through a spring- pressed plate 23 which yields under the pressure of the die. A disc 24 is punched from the strip while the plungers 22 and plate 23 yield to the punches and on the retractile movement the plunger 22 strips the die of the disc while the plate 23 returning to its normal position raises the remaining strip material, to the plane of the disc so that it is moved forward to the lining station with the strip. Plungers 25 carried by the crossbar 19 but beyond the dies 18 press the severed discs into caps moved into position in pairs by a turntable 8 and supported by an arcuate plate 9 beneath the table which is operated by a Geneva movement and which moves the lined caps beyond the plate 9 so that they fall through holes in the turntable on to a discharge belt 27. The unlined caps are fed to the turntable by a conveyer belt passing through a housing which admits their passage in single file and a horizontal slide mounted for reciprocation engages two caps at a time and pushes them under a plate into the holes of the turntable. A motor 31 drives a shaft 33 carrying eccentrics enveloped by straps to which are secured the lower ends of rods 20, rotation of the shaft causing reciprocation of the dies 18 and plungers 25. Shaft 33 also has a crank which through a connecting rod and arm oscillates a rocking shaft 41 carrying a pinion 42 meshing with a horizontal rack section 43. Parallel with shaft 41 is a shaft 44 carrying a pinion 45 and pawl arm at the end of which is a loosely pivoted pawl which engages a ratchet on a shaft 49 coaxial with shaft 44 and carrying the feed roller 15. Also on shaft 49 is a pinion meshing with a pinion on the shaft of upper feed roller 14 so that oscillation of shaft 44 causes intermittent feed of the strip 12. The pinion 45 meshes with a rack section 53 aligned with rack section 43 and connected to it by means of an arm 54 pivoted to rack 43 and having jaws 55 which embrace a bar 56 on rack 53 under the influence of a spring 57. In order to provide for the arresting of the strip feed when no caps are passing from the loading station, a shaft 77 has an arm 78 (not shown) kept raised by the feeding of the caps and an arm 81 carrying a roller 82 held in engagement with arm 54 by a spring 83. When feed of the caps ceases. the stronger spring 83 overcomes spring 57. swings the arms 81 and 54 upward to disconnect racks 43, 53 and arrest the strip feed.
