Abstract

An extreme pressure lubricant comprises a lubricating oil and at least 0.1 per cent of a compound of the class consisting of seleno-mercaptans and esters of selenic acid which, when thus included in the lubricant, will not show a substantial reactivity with copper when heated to 100 DEG C but will show such reactivity when heated to 250 DEG C. A table is given which defines substantial reactivity numerically. The lubricating oil may be of mineral, animal, vegetable or synthetic origin. Lauryl, cetyl, cyclohexyl, methyl-cyclohexyl, amylphenyl and lauryl-benzyl selenomercaptans are mentioned as suitable selenomercaptans, while suitable esters of selenic acid mentioned are dilauryl, dibenzyl and dicyclohexyl selenates. The lubricant may also contain organic halogen compounds, organic compounds containing a metal and organic derivatives of inorganic oxy-acids and of the corresponding mono- and polythio acids, since such compounds cooperate synergistically with the selenium compounds. Soap, corrosion inhibitors and organic oxygen compounds such as butyl stearate, methyl naphthenate and dibutyl phthalate may also be present in the lubricant. Specification 425,569 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, refers to the addition to lubricating oil of an organic sulphur or selenium compound which when thus included in the lubricating oil will not show a substantial increase in reactivity with iron or copper when heated to temperatures below 100 DEG C but will show such an increase in reactivity when heated to temperatures above 100 DEG C but below 250 DEG C. The various types of organic sulphur compounds, and the various types of the synergistic co-operating compounds which may also be added to the lubricating oil, are very fully listed. A table setting out the composition of 30 specific lubricants is included. This subject-matter does appear in the Specification as accepted.
