Abstract
680,069. Door latches. HALLAM, SLEIGH & CHESTON, Ltd. July 5, 1951 [Sept. 25, 1950; Jan. 31, 1951 ; June 11, 1951], Nos. 23398/50; 2392/51 and 13745/51. Class 44. A door latch, e.g. for a motor vehicle comprises a shallow casing 2 in which is pivotally mounted a latch plate 1 having a notch 9 to receive, as the door shuts, a striker 4 carried on a plate 27 on the door jamb. Slidably mounted against the side wall 2c, Fig. 4, of the casing is a member 11 formed with three shoulders 12, 13, 14 adapted to engage an arm 10 of the latch in the released, partly shut and fully shut (Fig. 4) positions respectively. A spring 15 tending to rotate the latch to the released position is secured at its other end to a lever 16 the free end of which bears downwardly on the slider 11 to urge it to the locking position. A plate 17 rotatably mounted on the spindle 6 of the latch has an inwardly turned lug 18 projecting under the slider for lifting it to the releasing position and outwardly lugs 19, 20 projecting through arcuate slots 21, 22 in the casing wall for actuation by outside and inside operating means. The inside operating means comprises a bellcrank lever having one arm bearing down on the lug 20 and the other arm connected by a link to an inside handle. A spring 34 has one arm bearing down on the lever 16 and another engaging the lug 19 to rotate the plate 17 to the unoperative position in which the lugs 19, 20 abut the sides of the slots 21, 22. Mounted in the bottom of the casing is a sliding wedge 28, the upper surface of which is exposed for engagement with the striker plate through the opening, 31, Fig. 1. The under-side of the striker plate is slightly inclined in the direction of closing and displaces the wedge against the spring 29. Both the underside 33 of the striker plate 27 and the top of the striker 4 may be inclined in the plane of the door as shown in Fig. 5, to correspond with similarly inclined surfaces of the wedge 28 and notch 9 to prevent movement of the door away from the jamb.
