Abstract

A lubricant improving agent, suitable for adding to a lubricating oil base to produce a lubricating composition, comprises as separate organic compounds, (A) a halogen-bearing organic compound, (B) an organic sulphur compound and (C) a sulphonic acid or sulphonate, in proportions corresponding to 0.1-20 parts by weight of A, 0.1-10 parts of B and 0.05-5 parts of C. The lubricating oil base may be of mineral, animal, vegetable or synthetic origin, and may contain sufficient of a thickening agent such as soap to give a grease structure. The lubricant improving agent may consist solely of ingredients A, B and C or may comprise mineral oil or other diluent or solvent. Ingredient A may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic and may contain chlorine, fluorine, bromine or iodine. Thus it may be a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon such as chlorinated mineral oil, chlorinated foots oil or chlorinated paraffin wax. Alternatively ingredient A may be obtained by chlorinating oxidation products of petroleum (e.g. acids, esters, ketones or lactones), or by chlorinating naphthenic acids or the esters, organic salts or metallic salts of naphthenic acids. Substances which may be employed as ingredient B are thioethers, thioalcohols, thiophenols, thioketones, organic thioacids or their esters or salts, thioamides, thioanilides, thiourea, heterocyclic compounds with sulphur as hetero-atom, organic polysulphides, thiosulphonic acid esters, sulphones, sulphoxides, reaction products of organic halogen compounds with sulphur or inorganic sulphur compounds, reaction products of amines with mercaptans or sulphides, and reaction products of organic oxygen compounds such as hydroxy compounds with inorganic phosphorus- and sulphur-containing reagents such as P2S5. Ingredient B may contain in the molecule inorganic or organic substituent radicles or groups such as halogen, -OH or -COOH, and the sulphur may be attached to the molecule in the form of an inorganic radicle. Examples of polysulphides are dioctyl, dixenyl, dibenzyl or phenyl benzyl disulphide, butyl trisulphide and butyl tetrasulphide, while examples of halogenated polysulphides are di-(amyl-chlorophenol), chlor-dibenzyl, di-(chlorphenyl), chlorphenyl ethyl and di-(chlor-ethyl-benzyl) disulphides. The sulphonic acids which may be employed as ingredient C may be chlorinated. The sulphonates which may be employed as ingredient C may be alkaline earth, magnesium or amine salts of sulphonic acids. Thus ingredient C may be calcium, barium, magnesium or zinc mahogany sulphonate, zinc salt of diethyl naphthalene thiosulphonic acid, salts of cyclohexyl phenyl sulphonic acid, sodium salt of phenyl chlor-benzene sulphonic acid, chlor sodium mahogany sulphonate, chlor-calcium mahogany sulphonate or calcium salt of cetyl chlornaphthalene sulphonic acid. In an example the lubricant improving agent consists of (A) chlorinated paraffin wax or hexachlor diphenyl oxide, (B) chlor dibenzyl disulphide, and (C) an oil solution of calcium mahogany sulphonate which has been chlorinated.
