Abstract

691,068. Generating combustion products under pressure. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. April 18, 1951 [July 17, 1950], No. 17794/50. Class 51(i) [Also in Group XI] Fuel burning means for a gaseous fluid propulsion jet comprises a flame stabilizing device 11 and a tubular casing 14 of small length compared with the length of the jet pipe 18, disposed within the jet pipe, the stabilizing device 11 being of smaller diameter than the casing. Fuel is supplied to an appropriate part of the casing 14 through the manifold 15 so as to ensure proper combustion. Some of the gaseous fluid passes between the casing 14 and the jet pipe 18. Pilot fuel is supplied to the stabilizing device through a pipe 12 and nozzles 27 and the upstream end of the device has swirl vanes 26. Further casings 14a, 14b of increasing diameters are disposed downstream of the casing 14, fuel being supplied to each through manifolds 15a, 15b. As shown, the device 11 is wholly within the casing 14 but it may be arranged entirely upstream or downstream of the casing. The invention is applicable in the case of reheating exhaust gases in a gas turbine jet propulsion plant or in the case of a ram jet. Specification 674.641 is referred to.
