Abstract
699,120. Extruding. COMPTOIR INDUSTRIEL D'ETIRAGE ET PROFILAGE DE METAUX. April 2, 1951 [May 3, 1950], No. 7639/51. Class 83 (iv). A method for hot extruding metals consists in inserting between the ingot and the die a non-homogeneous lubricating material made up of welded layers of vitreous material having a thermal diffusivity which varies from one layer to another and which partly or completely melts but remains viscous when submitted to the heat of the ingot. The non-homogeneous material may be in the form of a cylinder made of a number of glass layers welded together. The layers may be of multi-cellular or fritted glass of varying densities the layer of highest density being also the layer of highest diffusivity. Layers of multi-cellular glass may also be interposed between layers of fritted or solid glass. The lubricating material is placed between the die and the ingot with the layer of high diffusivity nearest to the ingot. The material may be made by placing two layers of glass grains each layer of different grain size in a mould the upper layer of smaller grain being interspersed with fine grains of a carbonaceous material which will develop gas upon heating. The mould is heated to a temperature sufficient to fuse the layers together and form an upper layer of multi-cellular glass and a lower layer of fritted glass. Specifications 607,285 and 661,555 are referred to.
